As New Zealand begins a four week lockdown, what could we be doing to shore up our health for ourselves and our loved ones?
People with chronic health problems are the most at risk from COVID 19 in terms of serious infection. and although mainstream media advises the best approach to avoiding the spread of COVID 19, such as hand washing often and social distancing, what seems to be missing from the discussion is the massive body of evidence that our diet and lifestyle choices can greatly influence how our bodies respond to illness. No amount of toilet paper we buy is going to help combat COVID 19 – which is sad to say for all those who now have several months supply!
Remember that chronic low grade inflammation underlies most of today’s common health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, chronic respiratory issues. Unfortunately a lot of what we typically put into our mouths contributes to this inflammation. We can reduce this and improve our health AND our immune system simply by eating whole plant foods and not eating processed foods or animal products. Plant foods, especially leafy greens and fruits and vegetables in a variety of colours contain healthy antioxidants such as the flavonoid Quercetin. There is evidence that through eating more plant foods we improve our immune systems and in particular, several studies show that plant polyphenols and flavonoids can improve outcomes with respiratory viruses like the flu. Flavonoid Quercetin has helped with infections and dealing with viruses. It is found in foods like Kale, red onions, capsicums, broccoli and red lettuce. Anything with colour! So how about eating plenty of leafy greens like kale, and the rainbow of other fruit and vegetables, instead of pro-inflammatory processed and animal foods? This is basically a WFPB nutrition plan. As well as enhancing your immune system, you’ll be doing your long term health a power of good. The use of supplements while continuing to eat pro inflammatory foods is a waste of money which could be better spent on anti-inflammatory whole foods for far greater benefits…so keep it simple – just eat plants!
We sincerely hope you, your families and friends are safe and healthy during these uncertain times. Our personal hope is that through a whole food plant based diet, we can help our community experience first hand the wonderful benefits eating this way has on our health and this planet.
We wish you, your families, loved ones and friends all the best for the coming weeks ahead. We’re going to get through this.
